Great East Japan Earthquake
Wikipedia excerpt
The Great East Japan Earthquake was caused by the Tohoku District – off the Pacific Ocean Earthquake on March 11, 2011 (2011) and the subsequent Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. It is called a great earthquake because it was a large-scale earthquake disaster.
In 12 prefectures, mainly in the Tohoku region, 18,425 people were killed or went missing due to strong tremors, tsunami, and fires in various parts of eastern Japan (excluding those related to the earthquake). This was the second largest earthquake damage in Japan since the Meiji period, after the Great Kanto Earthquake (estimated 105000 dead or missing). With the spread of smartphones and other devices, numerous images and photos were recorded in detail. The tsunami that hit and destroyed coastal towns and the meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant were shocking.
From the date of occurrence, it is sometimes referred to as 3.11.

A total of 404893 buildings were officially confirmed to have been completely destroyed, washed away or partially destroyed. At the peak immediately after the earthquake, there were about 470,000 evacuees, more than 8 million households without power, and more than 1.8 million households without water. According to the Reconstruction Agency, the number of evacuees as of February 28, 2021 was 41241, which is characteristic of prolonged evacuation.

Death due to crushing, damage or other causes: 4.23% (667 people)
Burned to death by fire: 0.92% (145 persons)
Unknown: 4.22% (666 persons)
Most of the victims of the disaster died from drowning caused by the tsunami. The tsunami included a large amount of sand, sludge from the seabed and toxic substances such as heavy oil from port facilities. When foreign substances such as sand entered the lungs, they blocked the trachea, and when harmful substances entered the lungs, they invaded the body, and in this case, they barely survived. It is thought that there were various circumstances that led to the drowning, such as difficulty in breathing, loss of consciousness due to rubble, and hypothermia accompanied by snow in March.
Most of the deaths from crushing, damage and fire were caused by tsunami debris.
